Esl Program Essay

The mission of Capital’s English-as-a-Second Language Program is to enable non-native English speaking students to develop and synthesize the core English language proficiency skills necessary for success in diploma and certificate programs at the College.

The integrated four-level ESL curriculum includes courses in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Each level consists of two courses taught by the same instructor that results in a type of learning community. Online computer-assisted language learning, which can be accessed anytime and anywhere, has been integrated into each level to facilitate student learning.

The first two levels are non-credit and start at the intermediate to advanced beginner level and continue to the intermediate level. The third and fourth levels are credit bearing and continue from the intermediate to advanced levels of language proficiency.

New students must complete an application and take a placement exam on a computer as well as provide a writing sample.

International Students (visiting students must maintain full-time student status)

International students must demonstrate a certain level of English proficiency to be eligible for admission at Capital Community College. For more information about admission requirements for international students, click here.

ESL Tutors

ESL Tutors are available for individual or small-group English language skill improvement practice and/or homework assistance at a variety of times to accommodate students’ schedules.

ESL Multimedia Language Learning Lab

Located on the fourth floor, this computer-aided language learning facility offers a range of software, audio, digital and online learning tools to students enrolled in the ESL Program. These learning tools can be utilized to supplement classroom instruction, and also provide an array of innovative and interactive opportunities for independent or collaborative language practice in the area of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

La misión del programa Académico de Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ESL), en Capital Community College es preparar a sus estudiantes para tomar cursos a nivel universitario y lograr sus metas educativas, ya sea para obtener un grado asociado o un certifícado.

El currículo de ESL incluye cuatro niveles de instrucción en las siguientes áreas: conversación, comprensión, lectura y escritura. Inicialmente, es requisito tomar un examen por el cual se evalúa el nivel de inglés del estudiante.

El personal de nuestro programa apoya al estudiante en su desarrollo educacional, así como en ayudarle a lograr sus metas académicas. Se incluye tutoría individual y en grupos, instrucción auto-dirigida y laboratorio computarizado, consejería académica, asesoría y referidos a servicios de apoyo que sean apropiados.

Las oficinas de ESL, el salón de tutorías y el laboratorio se encuentran en el 4to piso. El laboratorio, que está equipado con audio/video, suplementa la instrucción y brinda al estudiante la oportunidad de prácticar pronunciación y gramática.

Los estudiantes internacionales (estudiantes visitantes deben mantener la condicion de estudiante de tiempo completo)

In order to help those non-native people to be successful in the United Sates, there should have some kind of programs to help them to learn English effectively, but also to maintain their native language. Bilingual Education and ESL programs are systems that developed since the mid 1900s in the United States to reach the goal of helping non-native people with the language. ESL is stands for English as a Second Language, which is a program that?s mainly developed to supplement the Bilingual Education in order to give extra help to the immigrants to learn English. ?The profession of teaching English as a second language within the United States began to expand in the 1960s in response to increasing numbers of immigrant and refugee children entering the country, as well as to the growing numbers of international students attending U.S. universities? (Collier and Ovando, 1998). Students in the ESL program receive the instruction of their level of English proficiency, so they can learn the English from the very basic level. Once they get better with their English skills, they will be able to move out the ESL program and be as competitive as the native speakers of English in other subject classes. The first decades of ESL programs fails to help students with academic work in math, science, social studies, and other curricular areas but English. In order to improve this situation, ESL programs started to focus more in helping students with their academic works during the 1950s and 1960s (Collier and Ovando, 1998).
